Quick review – Acer Aspire 5542G

I got a brand new Acer 5542G laptop a few days back. These are my impressions after a few days of intense usage.

Before we go any further

I previously owned two Acer laptops and they both suffered from the same symptoms.

First – the screen is crap. It’s way too glossy and the viewing angle is horrible. Second, the DVD burner dies after 12-13 months. I never used it much anyway, I burned 20 or 30 DVD’s in total. But the fact that you can’t even read a CD / DVD makes things even worse.

Third, after 18 months of use the HDD starts to show signs of failure. And the last thing is the keyboard that gets really messed up after a lot of typing (I use it for programming mostly, so I type a lot). And while it’s not a hardware error, both laptops were fat. I used to feel some serious pain after typing for a longer period of time.

Will things go better this time? Or am I doomed into buying a MacBook next time?

Introducing Acer Aspire 5542G – 504G50Mn

Call me crazy but buying a laptop from Acer again but I do feel like I’m getting a lot of value for a reasonable amount of money.

It’s got a nice Turion II processor running at 2.2 GHz, 4GB of RAM, half terrabyte of HDD space and an ATi Radeon HD 4570 graphics card with 512MB of RAM. Plus an included installation of Windows 7 Home Premium. And it’s “light”.  All in all not a bad start.

First thing you’ll notice is a beautiful 15.6′ LED screen. Yes, a LED screen! The colors are amazing and the viewing angle is great. Movies look fantastic on this thing.

The keyboard is also good. The keys fit good and it doesn’t take long to adjust to the layout. Works well for long typing sessions. The laptop case feels solid but not all that solid. I’d give it an 8 out of 10 just because it feels plastic-like.

The computer boots up very fast, like in 10 seconds. This might be due to me removing Norton AntiVirus and every other crap that comes pre-installed. Windows 7 look fantastic, but anyone coming from XP or Vista will need some time to adjust.

The wireless card works perfect. The previous laptop always reported there were no wireless networks around me. This one reports over 10, and most of them unsecured (yay)! Update: Looks like my previous computer was missing some driver updates, showing the same networks now.

While movies do look great, the sound isn’t all that good. It has build in Dolby home theater (what ever that is) but the sound still lacks depth. Also, haven’t tested the HDMI port.

Games run fast. Call of Duty (Modern Warfare 1) and Oblivion run very fast at high resolutions.

All in all..

All in all, the laptop is a great buy. For this price (under $1000) you probably won’t find a better one. I’ll post a gallery soon.

Semantic Versioning

In the world of software management there exists a dread place called “dependency hell.” The bigger your system grows and the more packages you integrate into your software, the more likely you are to find yourself, one day, in this pit of despair.

Read all about semantic versioning and how to apply it to your projects.

Setting up goals for 2010.

After writing down what I feel were the most important things in 2009. it’s time to write down a set of goals for 2010. Out of 28 goals set for 2009. I completed only 2 so hopefully this will be a guideline I’ll stick to better.

One of the first things I have planned is a new design related startup. Well, a website / online shop. Top secret for now, but will bring in a dash of fresh air into the PSD 2 HTML scene. And save a lot of businesses a lot of time and money. I might even sell / close Image2Markup. (Interested in buying?)

February is the time when I’ll start getting in shape for the following summer. I’ve gained over 15 kg (~30 pounds) in the past two years and it’s time to loose some of that weight. I’m going back to Thai box.

I have planned to enter two competitions, Microsofts Dream.Build.Play! but that just might stop at the Dream part. The competition ends in March, too early for a novice 3D programmer like me to both design and code a game from zero. This also means I have to learn 3ds max very very fast in order to produce high quality scenes for the game.

March is the time when I plan on hunting for a new bike. One that will last me longer then one day.

The second competition is SeedCamp. I hope it willl be in Ljubljana again (like it was in 2009). I have a very cool idea under development at the moment and I plan to raise some seed money to bring it to life. SeedCamp is the perfect place to look for /seed/ funding. (Interested in funding me now? Email me.)

Following the previous post, I’ll continue to explore new platforms, Python / Django and Microsoft MVC stack seem good, but I don’t plan on switching to anything new before June.

I have plans to visit Tuscany in June / July. I saw pictures of it in a travel catalog and told myself “I need to go there”.

August brings a new trip – Provence. It’s just as beautiful as Tuscany. And a bit more expensive. (So far I need at least $2.000 just to visit these two places).

Once I’m back it will be time to get real. I plan on leaving the freelance life, starting a new company and dedicating myself to building something for the long term.

September should mark the start of my other planned startup. It’s a mix and match of 3 different websites under one brand. All 3 websites aim at web developers / web site owners and will help them provide better services to their customers. I pitched the idea to several /business/ people and all agree – it’s going to be awesome.

I’d like to visit Vienna again for Christmas 2010. It’s a really beautiful city.

I plan to blog at least once a week. Probably even more often as I have two weekly categories for developers lined up. The blog will be more about trends on the web and less about me.

I hope I won’t give up on movies and games. If anything, I’ll play even more. There’s a lot of RPG’s waiting for me. Maybe I’ll even finally finish Morrowind.

I do plan on giving up on Cola and sweets. I’ve cut down significantly, but it’s time to throw that away for good. I’ll start drinking tea like Kevin Rose.

There, only 20 goals for 2010. Wish me luck!

2009 – A year in review

I had this post in draft for over a week now with no sign of ever leaving draft mode. And then came this freezing Saturday that forced me to finish it.

It’s been a very busy year, this 2009. but luckily I didn’t forget to have fun. Under fun I mean traveling, lot’s of movies and a decent amount of gaming.

A funny side note: I have no TV. Been on TV-detox for the past 6 months ever since I moved to the new apartment (no TV signal, did’t like the $20/mo cable TV fee). And it feels awesome. I have more time for another passion now – cooking.

As I mentioned, I returned to gaming. Not too much, perhaps an hour a day, but still enough to feel like computers aren’t all about programming. BTW, I’m talking about Battlefield Heroes.

I did a lot of biking, bought a new bike and trashed it the same day. Guess I’ll have to get a new one for my birthday in March.

I feel like my PHP skills have reached a new level and it’s a shame I started looking at other languages. I’ve been playing with Python / Django for several months now. Same goes for ASP.NET MVC. I think I’ll wait until Microsoft releases version 2 of MVC before I choose my next platform.

Most of my PHP stuff ended up written in CakePHP. Then the team split and another framework was born, Lithium. I have two websites in draft, based on Lithium, just waiting for some time / motivation to finish them. Still waiting for CakePHP 2.0 to hit stable.

Work related, I’m still a freelancer. I guess a regular day job isn’t for me (it might be if a lot of money was on the table).

Image2Markup lost a lot of market share, partially due to a lot of competition in the PSD 2 HTML field, partially due to my poor design capabilities (the old site looked bad). When the new design was launched it was already late. Still, the regular clients still order with us.

Eventio, the events posting site for UK has had a rocky start. We made some great connections, now it’s all about gaining traffic and then a business model.

Just a week ago I thought it’d be impossible, but I started exploring 3D development, again. Left Lightwave3D in favor of 3ds max (this is a huge step for me!).

It’s just 20 days before the end of 2009 and here’s what I have planned for that time: Urban&4 concert (last one was 2 years ago) and a trip to Bratislava for the New Year.

Next post will be about my plans for 2010.

Dream Build Play! 2010 announced

Microsoft has announced it’s annual Dream.Build.Play! contest for 2010 and it’s going to be lenendary! If you’re interested in videogames and earining fame and fortune in the process then this is just the competition for you.

All you need to do is build a video game that’s 40% fun, 30% innovative and polished up like a gold plate and you might be a $40.000 grand prize winner. You also need to be over 16.

There are 3 more prizes to be won, $20.000, $10.000 and $5.000 (I’m aiming for the $20.000 one, so make sure you don’t make anything better then me!)

Also to make things more interesting, Old Spice is throwing away an extra $60.000 in a separate DBP contest to celebrate their 4 new deodorant fragrances (Matterhorn, Fiji, Denali, Cyprus). You can compete in both the standard and OS contests with the same game!

The circus starts on Jan 19th and ends on March 3rd 2010, so start working.

BTW, before you get your hopes up, here’s a video of the last years winner (it’s awesome).
